Contemporary Australian Poetry Workshops

By SCWC Member Kai Jensen

Contemporary Australian Poetry Workshop Series

There’s a free monthly workshop on contemporary Australian poetry happening at Bermagui Library – alternately you can attend by Zoom – or just ask to be on the email list to receive the readings and notes.

The workshops discuss poems by leading contemporary Australian poets, and issues of online Australian journals that publish poetry. We use these materials to explore current Australian poetic idioms and consider what we can learn from them for our own writing. Participants are supported to raise the standard of our poetry writing, by offering poems to the workshop for respectful constructive feedback. From time to time we interview leading Australian poets and editors of poetry to gain their advice on the poet’s path and writing with a view to publication.

The workshop is held on the second Thursday of each month, 2.30–4.30 pm. To receive the readings and Zoom details, email the workshop leader, Kai Jensen, on 0404 360 033. Kai has a PhD in English and is active as a poet: his poems have appeared in The Age, Overland, Southerly and Westerly; also in the New Zealand journals JAAM, Landfall, Metro, Poetry NZ, Printout, Sport and Takahe.
