5 Islands Press, named for the islands off Port Kembla, is a small press that publishes Australia’s finest poetry—anthologies, collections, chapbooks, and works on the lyric craft. Founded in 1986 by Ron Pretty and a cooperative of Illawarra poets, the press had several incarnations over the years, and was revived in 2023 by Steve Meyrick and Mark Tredinnick. Its charter, building on Ron’s legacy, is to publish the best poetry we can find, across many forms, cultures, voices, and languages, with a focus on lyric poetry and the poetries of place.

The Illawarra Flame is keeping community news alive against the odds. It is an independent publication run, written and read by locals. Named after a beautiful tree, the Flame shines a light on local people and places. It is free for everyone to read at theillawarraflame.com.au.
The seed for the Illawarra Flame was planted in the 2508 postcode a decade ago. What started as a small monthly paper has grown to become a much-loved celebration of the coastal communities of the northern Illawarra and, since March 2024, Shellharbour too.
Your support will go towards our community writing programs
Empowering Indigenous and Culturally Diverse Writers: We work with multicultural organisations including Illawarra Multicultural Services, to identify refugee and Aboriginal writers to mentor through a process of writing and publishing work in their own voices. We are committed to promoting inclusivity and amplifying the voices of Indigenous writers and those from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Contributions to the campaign will help us create targeted programs, workshops, and resources that honour and celebrate their unique perspectives, stories, and contributions to Australia's rich literary landscape.
Programs for Young Writers: Our programs for 10- to 25-year-olds provide a mentored developmental pathway for young people from junior through to graduate classes, with the opportunity for young people to hone their skills and create writing that is published and launched in the local community. Our programs for young writers are designed to ignite creativity, foster a love for storytelling, and develop essential writing skills. By donating to our campaign, the public will provide workshops, mentorship opportunities, and resources tailored to young writers, empowering them to share their unique voices and shape the future of literature.
Support for Emerging Writers: Emerging writers often face numerous challenges as they navigate their way into the literary world. Through our support programs, we offer mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities to help emerging writers hone their craft, gain confidence, and establish their place in the industry. Donations to our campaign will enable us to expand these programs and provide crucial support to those on the path to becoming published authors.
