Shoalhaven School Holiday Workshops
During the recent Spring school holidays, we presented our free first school holiday workshops in the Shoalhaven, engaging young writers from twelve to eighteen years and inspiring them to write and draw their own stories.
Award-winning illustrator and comic creator Louie Joyce presented a hands-on workshop showing children how they can create their own comics and use self-publishing and zines to get their stories out there. Other workshops included fantasy writing with Allison Tait and short story writing with Gabbie Stroud.
We had a great turnout of sessions, particularly at the Nowra library and Shoalhaven Regional Gallery. The children responded positively to all the workshops and engaged in new activities that grew their knowledge of creating stories through illustration and writing. One parent, in particular, said thank you for running workshops during the holidays as she was struggling to find things to keep her children engaged in the area.
Shoalhaven Libraries Customer & Community Resources Manager Gemma Luxford said “Shoalhaven Libraries were ecstatic to have A.L Tait, Gabbie Stroud and Louie Joyce visit our branches over the school holidays. Young writers aged 12-18 braved the rain to listen and learn from some of the best creative writers and creators. This program was well attended, with attendance higher than usual for programs targeted to the same age group. Thank you to the South Coast Writers Centre for organising this great program and offering it for free to enthusiastic young writers across the Shoalhaven.”
This program was presented in partnership with the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery and Shoalhaven Libraries. It was part of the Holiday Break program and is funded by the Office for Regional Youth in partnership with Create NSW.
