Remembering Treva Taylor

The South Coast Writers Centre would like to recognise Treva Taylor, who was a huge part of our activities and energy for many years, and who sadly passed away recently. Former Director of the South Coast Writers Centre, Friederike (Rike) Krishnabhakdi-Vasilakis, kindly wrote some words remembering Treva below.

Former SCWC Director Friederike Krishnabhakdi-Vasilakis:

I met Treva Taylor the first time at a SCWC board meeting about ten years ago. He was a proud bush poet and an outspoken advocate of this very unique form of Australian poetry. Just like his poetry, his contributions over the years as a board member in the SCWC Committee of Management were straight to the point: when the SCWC moved from Coniston Community Centre to Glennifer Brae, and then again from there to a University of Wollongong office, Treva was always the first to put up a hand to help.

He volunteered wherever he was needed: he took over the role as art auctioneer at the annual Black Wallaby Aboriginal Writers Night, helping to raise funds for the Aboriginal project Dreaming Inside. He ran a regular poetry group with Len Leffley for many years and instigated the Figgy Bowlo monthly poetry night, which ran for a few years as part of the regular SCWC events.

His generosity and his great sense of comradery and community won’t be forgotten.

Treva Taylor passed away peacefully in hospital, surrounded by his family on Monday, 21st March 2022. Soul mate and lover of Tricia. Loved brother-in-law of Patrick and Toni, Jenelle and Tony. Devoted uncle of Emma, Sarah, Sam, Ned, and Dan. Treva will be sadly missed by his extended family, many dear friends and faithful companion Lucy.
